Project complete

On May 23, Regular Council adopted the presentation and report on the study findings including recommended next steps on pursuing landfill expansion.

Since landfill expansion was the preferred option, an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) will be completed which will identify the preferred site(s). Stay tuned to Jump In, Kawartha Lakes for more information on the EA and next steps.

Background

Kawartha Lakes retained Dillon Consulting to complete a Future Waste Disposal Options Study that looked at different ways to manage garbage into the future. Nine alternative ways to manage garbage were reviewed and after considering the social, environmental and financial impacts, the preferred alternative was to expand an existing landfill site(s). It is noted that the Study did not look at specific landfill sites to expand.

Since the municipal election took place in October 2022, it was decided that the engagement results and the final Study Report would be presented to the new Council. Read the Study Summary Document for more information.
