We're excited to launch our new Heritage Designation Strategy which will help guide how we protect historic properties across Kawartha Lakes.

Kawartha Lakes and its predecessor municipalities have been designating historic properties since soon after the Ontario Heritage Act was first passed in 1975. However, to this point, we have not had a coordinated strategy to identify and prioritize properties for heritage designation.

In 2024, the Ontario government introduced the new Provincial Planning Statement (PPS) and one of the recommendations contained in this document was that municipalities create strategies for designating heritage properties. This strategy responds to that provincial direction so that we can be proactive and transparent in how we protect properties across our communities.
