The City of Kawartha Lakes protects properties through heritage designation under the Ontario Heritage Act. We have protected and designated properties in Kawartha Lakes and our predecessor municipalities since the Ontario Heritage Act was passed in 1975. Our heritage properties are vital parts of our communities that help tell our story, are points of pride for local residents, and attract visitors to our region.
The provincial government has made a number of changes to how we protect heritage properties over the last five years and, in the new 2024 Provincial Planning Statement, recommended that municipalities create strategies for how they designate properties. A heritage designation strategy will help guide staff, the Municipal Heritage Committee and Council to identify and protect the properties that are important to our residents, while fulfilling our legislative obligations.
We are looking for your input as we develop a framework for what our heritage designation strategy will look like so that it reflects our many communities and important local heritage.
