The City of Kawartha Lakes has started the first step in an Environmental Assessment to plan for the municipality’s long-term waste disposal needs. This first step is known as the Terms of Reference.
Background
The City currently disposes of waste that cannot be recycled or composted at its five active landfill sites. As available landfill space decreases and the municipality grows, the City needs to plan for additional capacity.
Previous studies (like the Future Waste Options Study), looked at different ways to meet future waste disposal needs and identified expanding one of the City’s existing landfills as the preferred long-term option.
The Terms of Reference will review this option using updated technical information and consider changes since the previous studies were completed (2022) if required.
The Environmental Assessment will build on the Terms of Reference study and complete in depth studies that are needed to support and develop the preferred long-term solution identified in the Terms of Reference.
There will be opportunities to learn about the project and share comments throughout the process. Click the + Follow button above to subscribe to future project updates.
