Kawartha Lakes is working on an updated plan to manage our waste. As our municipality grows, it is important that we have a strategy in place to manage waste in a way that is good for the environment and our budget. The strategy will develop actions that our residents, businesses, institutions, community groups, and the municipality can take to divert more waste away from our landfills by doing things like:

• Reducing waste at home (e.g., buying less, choosing items with less packaging, wasting less food)
• Reusing materials (e.g., purchasing gently used items, repairing items)
• Recycling (e.g., participating in the Blue Box program, using depots)
• Enhancing the local circular economy (e.g., finding opportunities to keep materials in circulation), and
• Composting (e.g., composting at home, implement a Green Bin program).

This is an exciting time to develop innovative waste management initiatives that make a positive impact on future generations in our community.

This project will update the Making Waste Matter – Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2020-2024. Many of the actions in the strategy were accomplished with the support of the local community. Some of the successes include:

• Paint Reuse Program
• Mattress Recycling Program
• Bulky Plastic Recycling Program
• Leaf and yard waste collection
• Textile Recycling
• Round Up Days
• Recycle Coach App
